How to make yourself aware in your life.

If you want to know how to become self-aware, then you must have already developed certain characteristics that are congruent with self-awareness.

These characteristics can be as simple as a sense of where your body is in space, or as complex as an ability to empathize with others. Self-awareness, however, should not be taken for granted. It is a process that can be effortlessly developed in anyone who wants to live an enhanced quality of life.

Self-awareness, by definition, involves being aware of one’s own self and what it entails. In fact, self-awareness is more about being aware of the qualities inherent in oneself than it is about being aware of one’s self in isolation. When we take personal responsibility for our own well-being, we gain a deeper understanding of ourselves, and this understanding can lead to self-awareness.

1. Reflect on Your Habits:

One of the first steps to take when considering how to become self-aware is to reflect on the habits that fuel your daily existence. What are these habits that you experience daily that are self-defeating?

Are they habits that you are unaware of, or are they ones that you actively keep going despite how much you know that they are harmful? This reflection will help you identify if you are self-defeating or if you are unaware of how you conduct yourself in the world.

2. Look at your Personality Traits:

After you have examined your habits in this way, you may also want to look at your personality traits. These can also help learn how to become self-aware. Do you tend to be self-critical or overly self-confident?

Are you quick to criticize yourself for the things in your life that you don’t like? Do you use overly strong adjectives when describing your qualities or your accomplishments?

If you are quick to criticize yourself or are not self-critical, you may need to examine how you evaluate your own qualities and accomplishments. For example, are you quick to criticize yourself for not living up to your expectations or for failing to meet a challenge?

If so, you may want to take some time to really think about what you are doing to evaluate these self-defeating qualities. How are you trying to evaluate your life and the people and things in it?

3. Begin your Journey:

Now that you are aware of your self-defeating behaviors and traits, you might want to ask those same questions of those you love most. Besides, do you have any habits or personality traits that you would like to change?

When you ask these questions, remember that your answers will probably be different than those of others. The truth is, everyone has a different perception of himself and wants different things from life.

Yet, even if you can’t identify a specific area where your personal weaknesses lie, you can begin to work toward improving them.

4. Seek Feedback:

One of the biggest steps you can take to become more self-aware is to get regular feedback about how you are doing. Do you have friends that are encouraging you? Have you had people admire or respect you because of your intelligence and talents?

If you feel less self-aware, you might be tempted to skip getting feedback and start doing what you are doing without analyzing it or considering the impact of your actions on other people or the environment.

Final words:

Another useful way to gain insight into how you are feeling is to enlist the help of others. Ask people you are close to how they perceive the way you are acting and interacting.

Although you may not want to rely on others to give you feedback, it is helpful to hear from people whom you can trust to tell you what you are doing or not doing correctly.
